• How To Suduko

We all know that Sudoku is a puzzle variation, a logic-puzzle to be more precise, which consists of a nine-by-nine grid of tiny squares, divided to three-three sub grids (which are sometimes referred to as regions) which are called boxes. Sudoku rules are actually extremely easy to understand and apply.

Because solving a game of Sudoku does not require any knowledge of mathematics (simple logic is more than sufficient), practically anyone can play! For example, some variations of Sudoku use nine different symbols instead of digits, making it more attractive for children.

Initially you are provided with an incomplete grid (only some of the tiny squares are filled in; these are called “the givens” and must not be changed). Well, it is up to you now to complete the entire grid with numbers from 1 to 9 so that each column, each row and each three-by-three square contains each number only once (this explains the meaning of “Sudoku”, which is translated as “single-number”).

Be careful though! Solving a game is far more complicated than its rules a true Sudoku has one unique solution and it must be solved without any form of guesswork. Guesswork is a very tricky business; if you don’t make the right choice (guess), then the game is compromised and you must start all over again. Bummer, right?

Even if the game can sometimes be very complex, there’s no need to freak out. I mean, the main attraction of the game is that even if the rules are simple, the line of reasoning required to entirely complete the puzzle may be very complex. That’s why there are several level of difficulty; in general the puzzles where one is given fewer starting numbers are more difficult than those where several squares are completed from the very beginning. This is due to the fact that in this case the effort that one needs to put in order to get started increases, one must perform more and more complex logic; for example, sometimes there’s only one starting avenue that you must find in order to complete the puzzle; if you don’t manage to find it… well, then the whole game will remain a mystery to you.

Despite all these “traps” that kind of oblige each player to be very careful at each and every step, Sudoku has proved to be very addictive; it’s appearances in various magazines and newspapers bringing him true fans among adults and children as well.
